Chicken kare-kare (Chicken stew in peanut sauce)

Chicken kare-kare

Chicken kare-kare

THE VERY FIRST DISH that came to mind when I was contemplating to become a vegetarian for the sake of love was kare-kare. It would be very difficult to give up. But love prevailed and I never had kare-kare since then. This was two decades ago. As fate would have it, the love was eventually lost and I had since gone back to eating meat (poultry, yes. four-legged animals, no.)

Cinnamon chicken tagine

Cinnamon chicken tagine

For Valentine’s Day, I received three gifts from my gorgeous partner-in-crime JD. First, a flower garden he cultivated in the backyard at 6AM in the morning of Valentine’s Day.

JD and Dolly's Valentine's Day Dinner

Second, a Jamie Oliver-inspired candlelit dinner for two in our kitchen (he cooked 3 dishes in 30 minutes!) and last but not the least, a huge gift-wrapped box. Inside was an orange tagine.

What to do with chicken flakes

Miso fried rice with chicken flakes

Canon 600D, ISO 100, 0.3 sec, f/4, 50mm lens

HELLO! I have been out of action for a wee while. I’m still cooking and still shooting, but haven’t been posting and dropping a note or two to fellow bloggers out there. I have been busy with work, photo shoots and getting ready for my upcoming vacation to the U.S. of A to visit my beloved BF. After some hiccups, I managed to get 2 months off work starting this August. 8 weeks! I can blog everyday!

At the tail-end of my vacation, I will attend the 3-day International Food Blogger Conference 2013 in Seattle, WA (home to my blogger friend CottageGroveHouse.com) I am looking forward to Andrew Scrivani‘s food photography session. That will be the highlight for me, and also meeting food bloggers in person whose photography I adore (Savory SimpleDamn Delicious).

But what has this got to do with chicken flakes?

Chicken and herbs sausage rolls

Chicken sausage rolls

Canon 600D, ISO 200, 1/30 sec, f/4, 24-70mm

SAUSAGE ROLLS, an all-time Kiwi favourite. They serve it in the office on occasions where snacks* are provided. [*They call it morning tea or afternoon tea.] Never had one. Because the sausage rolls they serve are either beef or pork. I don’t eat meat from four-legged animals.

Roasted chicken, vine tomatoes and eggplant with caramelized onions and mushrooms

I photographed as I ate.

Canon 600D, ISO 400, 1/125 sec, f/2.8, 24-70mm

I have planned this meal for days. I picked up something in the supermarket that I never knew existed. Brandy butter! What was that? I read the label: sugar, butter (35%), brandy (11%). Alright, I love alcohol in my food so I grabbed a bottle and went home blissfully. For those who didn’t know (maybe just me) – it is sweet! And the strong taste of brandy gives it a kick.
