Fish head anyone?

Salmon Fish Head

I HAD THE WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY to meet up with two very talented pro food photographers while on vacation in this foodie-haven-of-a-city called Portland.

One of them is David L. Reamer of http://www.dlreamer.com. I stumbled upon a website called CatchingTheOx.com that David and a friend started some years back. That was how I learned about him. But it wasn’t until my third visit to Portland that I decided I should get in touch to (1) say hello and (2) pick his brains. He didn’t disappoint. I learned so much in so little time that I spent with him. He is an amazing guy! David, if you’re reading this, thank you for sharing your experiences and for letting me pick your brains! Your Google story amuses and inspires me no end.  It’s a perfect example of the saying “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

Speaking of brains, David graciously invited me to get involved in the Catching The Ox project. I suggested ‘fish head’ as subject and he was game. Check it out here: http://catchingtheox.com/projects.php

Salmon Fish Head

The salmon fish heads are courtesy of a sweet and generous Filipino friend in Portland named Raquel. She not only let me shoot the heads, but she also cooked them! It’s been a while since I’ve eaten fish heads so it was a treat to share a fish head lunch with a friend. We call this Filipino dish Sinigang na Ulo ng Isda (Fish Head Sour Soup). Raquel’s recipe to follow.

Did I say I met up with two very talented pro food photographers in Portland? Can you guess who the other one is? If you guess it right, I’ll give you a doughnut! Watch this space =)

About Dolly Rubiano

I am passionate about photography and food is my favourite subject. I like shooting people too, especially when they’re not looking. I am a regular contributor as photographer to FishHead magazine, a local lifestyle magazine in Wellington, New Zealand. I blog about my experiments in the kitchen and don't cook anything that has four legs. Please get in touch if you would like to work with me regarding food styling and photography.
